The King(s) have returned to rule!
December 13th, 2009 | by luton |Don’t jump to conclusions just yet but the Kings leap frogged a few teams, most importantly the San Jose Sharks for first place in the Western Conference. This is good news for the Kings and their fans, this should give them some confidence that they can be contenders. They may even get an early Christmas gift as Ryan Smyth is skating and should be able to return right around Christmas time. We should keep in mind that the Kings are tied with San Jose but have more wins. They don’t want to let it go to their heads too much. Chicago and Calgary are a few points behind and have a few games in hand. Even the Canucks who sit in 10th are only 9 points back. There is a lot of hockey left and if the Kings slip it could be devastating.
That being said the Kings look great and although many of their games have gone to overtime or shoot outs, the bottom line is they seem to be coming out with the 2 points. The Kings are getting some good goaltending from Quick who seems to be finding his form from last year, but he has a big work load and I still think a veteran backup to lighten that load would be in their best interest. Not someone to threaten his job just someone who could play a few more games than Ersberg. Martin Biron, Ty Conklyn, and Chris Osgood all come to mind as possible suitors. Biron was probably on the A list for most teams in need of a goalie, but he is a reliable veteran who is inexpensive. He might not be as available as we all thought he would be. Rick Dipietro played in his second AHL game and got hurt, the Islanders say it is not related to his previous injuries however it is hard to believe that it is not especially since it is his knee rumoured to be injured.
All in all the Kings are in good shape coming into the Xmas season. With confidence and Ryan Smyth returning ,the new year should be exciting for the Kings.
